On May 16, 1967, apparently responding to a Soviet message that Israel was preparing for war against Syria, Nasser asked the United Nations (UN) to remove the international forces that had been stationed in the Sinai near the Israeli-Egyptian border since 1957.

However, although Hashemite rule had ended, Jordanian civil servants on the West Bank, including Abu Ziad, did not have to worry about finding new jobs. King Hussein declared that all of his civil servants would continue to receive their salaries. Initially, Abu Ziad assumed that the West Bank would quickly be returned to Jordan. He was certain that the Israelis would rapidly withdraw. 22 At the end of June the British embassy in Amman reported to London that the king still did not accept that the Palestine problem had no military solution.
